Upma - Southern Indian Breakfast

I watched YT again. One of my favourite channels is TabiEats. Two guys from Japan, who eat and travel. They are fun to watch. Sometimes they do home cooked stuff.

This is an South Indian breakfast dish. It is like a savoury semolina Pudding. This Upma recipe is new on their Play list.

I am a huge fan of warm sweet semolina Pudding. Often eaten with Fresh or canned fruits. I was Looking Forward to a spiced Version.

It is a quick meal or breakfast. Easy to prepare. I changed the ingredients a bit as I cooked it.

recipe for 2:
70 g semolina Douro
1 tbsp red lentils
1 tsp yellow lentils
1 tsp dried Curry leaves
1 green or red Chili
1/4 of a red bell pepper
1 large spring onion
2 shallots
2 cloves of garlic
1 knob of ginger
1 tsp brown mustard seeds
1/2 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp garam masala
4 tsp ghee
boiling water
salt and pepper

Use a pan with a good closing lid.
Heat up 1 tsp of ghee and dump the semolina in. Roast it until it gets lightly darker. Take it out of the pan and wipe the pan.
Heat up the rest of the ghee and add the seeds and let them pop.

Now onion, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and bell pepper and chili. Pan fry it.
When the onions are soft, add lentils and give that a good stir, then pour the semolina back into the pan. Season, but no salt!
Bring water to a boil in a kettle and pour it over so that it stand above the mix. Stir in well, close the lid and reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 12 min. The water should be absorbed by now.

Dress with fresh parsley or coriander if you like.
