Mashed Potatoes, Bread and Pears

In Hessian dialect:  STUMSEL & PEARS

It is a vegetarian dish that can be changed into a vegan dish without fuss.

Basically it was poor people food. We sometimes ate that when I was a child and Mom had to stretch the household money to last the month. And my Gran had lots of Mason jars filled with pears from her garden

I haven't eaten it since I was a teenager.

Today, it tasted just like in the old days and I liked it a lot.

Cook a pot full of potatoes in a good amount of salt in the water

Drain and steam off. Mash roughly.
Older bread, preferable not toast cut into chunks.
In a wide pan melt 3 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp oil and brown the bread.

Mix the bread with the hot potatoes.

Pears:
500 g conference pears
100 ml apple juice
100 ml water
Lemon juice
Sugar
1 Cinnamon stick

Peel the pears and get the middle out.
Put into the pot with the other ingredients and heat up. Cook until soft but not mushy.
Best prepare that the evening before and let it cool in the fridge over night.
When you peel the pears, store them in cold lemon water to prevent oxidising.
